UNITED METHODIST WOMEN
Just the Right Thing for Women of the Faith

United Methodist Women at Madison First United Methodist Church can best be defined as ‘women uniting for study, outreach and fellowship.’ The UMW meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the home of one of its members, and is currently discussing a new study, Hal Urban's Life's Greastest Lessons. Outreach projects are undertaken on a quarterly basis, with the highlight each spring being our Senior Banquet when we honor our graduating seniors and their families.

If you would like more information about this active, mission-oriented, supportive group of United Methodist Women, please contact Donna Martin, President, at 706.342.2669.

UNITED METHODIST MEN
Just the Right Thing for Real Christian Men

The United Methodist Men have been busy this year supporting our church and reaching out to the Madison community. UMM meets the first Sunday of each month at the church for a breakfast meeting and spiritual program. The group of dedicated men sponsors many projects throughout the church year. Money made from projects such as bar-b-cues and church lunches are used to send children to camp, fund mission work, support the Caring Place and Habitat for Humanity as well as local and church needs. A highlight of the United Methodist Men’s year is the annual Sweetheart Banquet in February for the ladies of the church. Come and join this dedicated, motivated group of men!

Samaritan Counseling Center

The story of the Good Samaritan is one of the most familiar stories in the Bible. It is the heart-warming story of a person who goes out of his way to minister to someone who is beaten, abused, and left by the roadside to die. Not every one finds themselves in such a desperate situation, but few of us go through life without experiencing pain of one kind or another. At such times, it is helpful to find someone who will care and listen to our concerns, someone who will help us through life’s difficult circumstances and set us on the road to healing and wholeness.

The Samaritan Counseling Center offers members of our church and community just such encouragement and help. The main office is in Athens, if you need the support of a professional counselor, we encourage you to consider the Samaritan Counseling Center at 1-369-490-7911.

FUMC RECREATION
Just the Right Fun, Exercise, and Fellowship

This summer FUMC had an enthusiastic and talented softball team in the Morgan County Men’s Softball League (Church Division). This is a fun, yet competitive league and, as always, FUMC made a great showing. Not only did the men win their share of games, but they competed with an exemplary spirit of Christian fellowship.

The men will be starting the fall flag football season the first week of October. With our FUMC talent, we expect to have another winning team this year. All are welcome to come out and support our FUMC teams! If you have any questions about the recreation programs at FUMC, please contact Troy Bryant .

J H Ministries

JH Ministries is an all encompassing ministry of wonderful folks with special needs. Jean Holder is the coordinator of ministry.

During the months of November, December, and January, members of the JH Ministries group have been very busy! In November, we visited the home of Debbie Lamb, where we had lunch, created Christmas ornaments, and decorated our float for the annual Christmas parade. In December, we participated in the Christmas parade, winning an award for Best Use of Theme. The theme was "Oh Christmas Tree" we represented each of our members as unique branches on a Christmas tree. Each member and sponsor held a Christmas tree branch with a handmade ornament hanging from it. Our group also participated in Caroling with the church in December. On Sunday, January 16th, the JH group members attended the 9 Alive church service and Sunday School, before walking to the Chop House for lunch. We will be using our Madison Bucks, won for our entry in the Christmas parade. As always, we encourage your participation in our group activities. If you would like to participate with JH Ministries in the coming months, please call Jean Holder, (706-717-1105) or Fran Holmes, (706-474-4772). We have many exciting events planned!

THE SONSHINERS Sunday School Class

“The Sonshiners”, our special community outreach Sunday school class, meets on the 4th Sunday of each month here at Madison First United Methodist Church. Our members range in age from teenagers to adults and come from all over the county. Fran Holmes and Jean Holder founded the class, and Sandra Bone is the teacher.

Some of our lessons thus far have been “Fishing for Men”, “Being a Friend”, and “Make a Joyful Noise unto the Lord.” Each lesson is tied to literature and is enhanced with games and activities.

On our special Sundays, we usually sit at tables to the right of the pulpit for early service, have our class in the Wesley Building, and then, go to a local restaurant for lunch. We are a lively, friendly group, so stop by and tell us “hello”. You are welcome to join us for lunch. On September 25, 2011, we will be dining at Arby’s.
